Understanding Dry Needling Regulations in NY
In NY State, dry needling is considered an invasive procedure. At the time of writing this post (10/2024), only licensed acupuncturists and physicians with extensive training are legally allowed to perform it. Physical therapists and chiropractors cannot legally perform dry needling in NY.
Training requirements in NY State
Acupuncturists: 3,000+ hours of training over 4 years, focusing on the safe and effective use of needles.
Physicians: 300 hours of medical acupuncture training, despite already being trained to draw blood and inject medicine.
How Other States Differ
In some states, physical therapists and chiropractors can offer dry needling with as little as 54 hours of training:
Theory: 40 hours on anatomy and principles.
Hands-On: Only 40 hours of supervised practice.
Why The Restriction In NY State?
NY state restricts dry needling to licensed acupuncturists and physicians due to safety concerns. Without extensive training, the risk of complications increases including:
Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
Hemorrhage (severe bleeding)
Cardiac tamponade
Nerve injury
Infection
Even minor risks include extensive bruising.
Choose Wisely
When it comes to needles, always trust licensed professionals with proper training.
Your safety comes first!
