What is an Active Couch Potato?
Do you hit the gym first thing in the morning 5-6 days a week? Maybe you go for a long run or swim every day, checking the box for physical activity. But then, you spend the rest of your day working 40-60 hours a week, mostly sitting at a desk. If this sounds like you, you might be an "active couch potato." Even with regular exercise, a mostly sedentary lifestyle can still have negative effects on your health such as:
Muscle Imbalance
Sitting for long periods can lead to tight hip flexors and weak glutes, causing poor posture and potential musculoskeletal issues.Slow Metabolism
Prolonged sitting slows your metabolic rate, making it harder to regulate blood sugar and blood pressure, increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.Poor Circulation
Extended periods of sitting reduce blood flow to your muscles, leading to feelings of tightness and stiffness.Back and Neck Pain
Poor posture from sitting can cause chronic back and neck pain. Regular movement and proper ergonomics are key to preventing this.Weight Gain
Even with daily exercise, a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to weight gain due to reduced calorie expenditure throughout the day.Mental Health Impact
Prolonged sitting is linked to increased restlessness and anxiety. Staying active throughout the day can help improve your mood and mental well-being.
The fact you go to the gym makes you already ahead of the game. However, like most who need to work, our time is often heavily skewed toward the sedentary versus the active. Incorporating some simple movements/actions during your busy schedule may help offset some negative effects.
Tips to Stay Active
Take short breaks to move every hour (try squats, lunges, jumping jacks, push-ups, or running in place).
Don’t keep water by your desk—leave it in the kitchen or somewhere else to encourage movement.
Get a height adjustable desk so you can alternate between standing and sitting while working.
Walk while on the phone.
