Tired of Foam Rolling? Try Dry Needling instead
If you're tired of using foam rollers or a hand-held massager to release tight, stubborn knots, Dry Needling could be a game-changer for you.
What is Dry Needling?
It is the insertion of thin, sterile needles (acupuncture needles) directly into trigger points to release the tension and reduce pain in the muscle. The term “dry needling” is to distinguish this needle type versus the “wet needle”, better known as a hypodermic needle used for injecting something into the body.
How It Works:
As the needles are inserted, the goal is for the trained practitioner to get a twitch response from the specific muscle with the knots. This positive response indicates the contraction and release of the muscle usually yielding a reduction in pain/tension.
Who is Dry Needling for?
Most people are good candidates for dry needling. If you had a recent surgery or are pregnant, consult your physician or practitioner to see if dry needling is appropriate at this time.
Connection to Acupuncture
When talking about trigger points, there are correlations between Eastern and Western medicine where the identification of the same issues in the body exists but differ in naming convention.
Acupuncture has a concept called Ashi Points which are basically areas that are painful or tender on palpation. In Western medicine, these same areas would be referred to as a trigger point or a muscle knot. Any tender area of the body anatomically safe to needle would fall under the category of being an Ashi point.
Because modern acupuncturists are heavily trained in modern anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology as well as modern Chinese medicine being much more integrated with modern western science and medicine, today’s acupuncturist can execute dry needling and offer a wide spectrum of additional treatments.
Say goodbye to foam rollers and temporary fixes and get real relief with this integrated approach.
