ArTeva Lab: Older Adult with One sided Hip Pain & Reduced Calf Size

A patient in his sixties, dealing with one calf noticeably smaller than the other and persistent hip pain on the opposite side for over 3 years. Despite working with a trainer, he couldn’t build strength in that calf, and his hip would seize up after walking for too long.

Uncovering The Issues

During the assessment, we performed a Single-Leg Calf Raise Test, which showed he couldn’t lift his heel off the floor on the side of the smaller calf. This finding, combined with his history of disc herniations and sciatica suggested possible nerve compression.

The Path To Relief

Through neuro-acupuncture, we were able to stimulate the branches of the sciatic nerve and activate the calf muscle. The results were favorable:

  • He can now walk longer distances without his hip muscles seizing up.

  • His smaller calf is getting stronger and more stable.

  • He feels more balanced and confident in his movements.

Colaboration

In addition to acupuncture, I recommended he see an orthopedic MD to evaluate his lower back for nerve compression within the spinal structures and to conduct an EMG (Electromyography) test to check nerve conductivity.

Alongside his acupuncture treatments, he has been working on calf raises against the wall and practicing nerve flossing exercises to further support his recovery.

The Journey To Recovery

This story highlights how a simple test like the single-leg calf raise can reveal the underlying causes of pain and imbalance. With the right approach, including neuro-acupuncture, targeted exercises, and proper medical evaluation, it’s possible to rebuild strength, balance, and quality of life at any age.
